FAQs

After applying and selecting your preferred location (London or Manchester/Liverpool), you’ll be allocated a provisional 3-hour audition slot and notified by email. Please confirm your availability within the stated timeframe. You’ll receive at least two weeks’ notice to prepare.

You’ll receive a set list of required excerpts and one classical concerto. In your audition, you’ll be asked to prepare the exposition of the concerto and at least two of the listed excerpts. Please prepare all excerpts as they will be chosen at random on the day.

Yes.  In exceptional circumstances we can help with intercity travel costs, particularly for candidates based outside London or Manchester. If you feel you may need support, email rc@blim.org.uk as early as possible with your location and details of your request.

Please arrive up to 30 minutes before your scheduled time. One of our ushers will welcome you, guide you through check-in, and help you get settled. Our team works to create a calm, supportive environment. Feel free to ask for help if needed.

Yes. After check-in, you’ll have 10–15 minutes in a private warm-up room to settle, tune, and focus before your audition.

Yes. You’ll have a 10-minute rehearsal with one of our professional accompanists to confirm tempi and make any final adjustments.

Yes, you’re welcome to use your own accompanist. Please let the admin team know in advance so this can be arranged.

Our accompanists have standard scores, but we strongly recommend bringing your own copy to ensure you’re using the same edition and markings.

Yes. All auditions are screened with a physical barrier to ensure anonymous assessment based solely on musical performance.

Panels consist of professional musicians from participating orchestras, including specialists in your instrument and members of the Global Majority.

Yes. Auditions are audio recorded for reference during panel discussions, supporting a fair and transparent process.

You’ll be contacted up to three weeks after your audition. This allows the panel time for careful review. Notification will be sent via the contact details you provided.

Yes. Panel feedback can be sent to you on request.

Congratulations! You’ll join the extra work list and will be contacted directly by each orchestra within a few months, depending on opportunities available. Initially, you may be offered lower-pressure engagements to get familiar with the orchestra. 

Please don’t be discouraged. Auditions are a learning experience and you can return in future years with greater confidence. Take feedback on board, continue developing your skills and consider applying again.
