On Friday, 6th December 2024, Black Lives in Music will host ‘Moving the Dial’, an invite-only symposium at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This special gathering will bring together leaders from conservatoires, music education institutions, and BLiM partners to share ideas and tackle some of the challenges in creating a more equitable and representative arts sector.
Set in the Theatre at Milton Court, the day promises inspiring keynotes, thoughtful discussions, and practical workshops. Themes will include freedom of speech, nurturing inclusive environments, and increasing diversity in programming.
Event Highlights:
•Insights on embedding cultural change in higher education from Slow Train Coming authors Dr. Diljeet Bhachu and Dr. Amy Blier-Carruthers.
•A reflective discussion on navigating freedom of speech challenges, led by Trinity Laban’s leadership team.
•A conversation with James Ainscough OBE, CEO of the Royal Albert Hall, on balancing artistic programming and audience development.
•A presentation by Dr. Charisse Beaumont, CEO of Black Lives in Music, introducing the Anti-Racist Code of Conduct and the innovative EquiTrack tool.
•Practical advice from Mohammed Ilyas, Guildhall’s Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, on fostering cultural awareness within organisations.
The day will also offer opportunities to connect over lunch and a drinks reception, creating space for collaboration and fresh ideas.
As Black Lives in Music continues its mission to inspire change, ‘Moving the Dial’ marks the start of a new conversation around equity and inclusion in the music and arts sectors.
