BLiM at SXSW London: Celebrating Black British Talent and Driving Change

Over two impactful days, we brought vital conversation and unforgettable live music to the heart of Shoreditch, spotlighting Black British talent and pushing forward the conversation around the future of Black music in the UK.

From the stage to the panel room, our presence at SXSW London was more than a moment, it was a statement. One that continues to echo as we work toward a more equitable and representative music industry.

On Tuesday 3 June, our CEO Dr Charisse Beaumont joined the panel “How Do We Feed the Economy of Black Music for the Next Five Years?”. The discussion explored the structural changes needed to truly support and sustain Black music talent, from investment and equity to long-term cultural impact. It was a vital conversation, setting the tone for the future.

On Wednesday 4 June, we took over The Ditch at Shoreditch Town Hall for our official SXSW London showcase, a powerful celebration of Black British music and creativity. The atmosphere was electric from the very first note. Every performance pulled the audience in completely, taking them on a rollercoaster of emotion. You could feel every key pressed, every string played. The crowd was engaged with no distractions, just pure connection through music.

The night featured unforgettable performances from:

  • Carleen Anderson with Melior Opus Griot
  • Amiri Harewood
  • The Forever Presence
  • Braimah Kanneh-Mason with Plinio Fernandes
  • Ayanna Witter-Johnson

The space welcomed a diverse crowd, united by the power of the performances. That is exactly what Black Lives in Music strives for: creating environments where artists can stand centre stage, be heard, and be celebrated for the brilliance they bring.

We are thankful to SXSW London for the opportunity to showcase this talent and be part of such a pivotal moment.

Thank you to all the artists and attendees who helped make BLiM’s presence at SXSW London such a success. And a special thank you to SXSW London for the platform and opportunity.
