BLiM’s Innovative 10-Point Plan Helps to Increase Diversity within UK Orchestras

Black Lives in Music, in collaboration with The Musicians Union and the Association of British Orchestras (ABO), recently unveiled its 10-Point Orchestra Plan. The plan aims to help review and support the recruitment policies of orchestras to provide more opportunities for musicians from diverse backgrounds.

After a session at the ABO’s 2023 Conference led by our Operations Director, the ABO and the Musicians’ Union joined forces to create a 10-point action plan to support inclusive hiring in UK orchestras and choirs. This plan, developed with input from orchestra musicians and managers, seeks to establish a unified approach to recruiting musicians in the UK classical music sector.

32 orchestras from across the United Kingdom have pledged to implement the plan. Starting in the spring of 2024, each orchestra will undertake two actions from the plan annually. The plan aims to increase opportunities for all orchestral musicians across the UK and drive change towards more inclusive recruitment.
