A Day of Exclusive Performances and Inspiring Experiences*

For this groundbreaking and momentous day, we’ve curated performances and talks that will take attendees on a journey through the experiences of being Black in classical music, while exploring the rich and diverse sounds of classical music from underrepresented musicians.

11:30 am – Being Black in Classical Panel Discussion
Hear from prominent voices in classical music and the arts as they share their journeys, experiences, and contributions to the industry. Moderated by Roger Wilson.
Panellists: Dr. Dilijeet Bachau, Nneka Cummins, Emma Dabiri, Beatrice Nichols and Linton Stephens.

2:30 pm – New Works Performance
Be among the first to witness exclusive premieres of newly commissioned and recent works by acclaimed British composers Julian Joseph, Pete Letanka, and Jason Yarde. Classical-Soul pioneer Alexis Ffrench will also deliver a keynote address and lead ‘Composers in Conversation.’

4:00 pm – Emerging Talent Showcase
Celebrate the artistry of the next generation of classical musicians as they bring fresh perspectives to classical music.

7:30 pm – The Sound of Classically Black: Ayanna Witter-Johnson & Friends
The evening culminates with a captivating live performance from award-winning international singer-songwriter Ayanna Witter-Johnson. Enjoy her unique blend of classical music with her friends and live band.

For those unable to join us or wishing to relive the experience, the concert will be recorded and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds on Wednesday, 23rd October, and available on BBC Sounds for 30 days.

Hidden Symphonies Exhibition
Created by performer and conductor Dwight Pile-Gray, the Hidden Symphonies exhibition will be launched at Classically Black. Displayed throughout the day, his exhibition highlights two centuries of overlooked Black composers, from Chevalier St George to contemporary stars like Hannah Kendall and Daniel Kidane.

World Premiere with the BBC

We’re thrilled to collaborate with the BBC Symphony Orchestra for the world premieres of Pete Letanka’s and Jason Yarde’s newly commissioned works. The live recording will take place on Wednesday, 9th October at the iconic BBC Maida Vale Studios. Catch the broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Classical Live on Wednesday, 23rd October, or listen on BBC Sounds for the following 30 days.
