Black Lives in Music has partnered with We Are The Unheard to proudly present Turn It Up, a 4-day engineer camp designed specifically for Women and Gender Expansive people of colour. This camp offers a unique opportunity for emerging sound engineers to hone their engineering skills through immersive, hands-on training, workshops, and mentorship from top professionals in the industry.
Participants will have the chance to dive into the unique world of sound engineering and audio whilst exploring their creativity and self-expression in a supportive, inclusive environment. The camp will feature workshops and practical sessions on key topics such as audio technology, recording, mixing, and Dolby Atmos. Additionally, participants will gain invaluable industry insights, career advice, and networking opportunities led by women of colour who are successful industry leaders, engineers, vocal producers and producers.
The goal of Turn It Up is to increase the job opportunities for women of colour within sound engineering. To equip participants with enhanced skills, support, boosted confidence, and the resources they need to pursue sound engineering further, secure internships, and land job placements in the industry.
The camp will take place at Platoon Studios in London from 18-21 November 2024, with an all-female team of renowned producers and industry professionals leading the sessions.
Requirement
Eligibility:
All applicants must be 18+ years of age and belong to a Global Majority background. Please note this camp is only available to those who identify as Female or Gender Expansive. UK residents only.

We Are The Unheard is an award-winning organisation dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices and promoting gender equality in the music industry. Founded by Eve Horne in 2022, the organisation has made a significant impact across various sectors of the music industry and around the world.
We Are The Unheard is a Community Interest Company that is at the forefront of a transformative movement within the music industry, addressing the critical need for gender equity and diversity. With a focused mission to challenge the stark statistic of only 3% female producers in the UK’s top 100, our organisation is driving meaningful change.
Through strategic initiatives in education, collaboration, and advocacy, we are not merely aiming to alter statistics but to fundamentally reshape the landscape of the music community.
Aims and Objectives
Through a 4-day program, creatives from diverse backgrounds and experience levels will converge, guided by the best producers and engineers, to amplify their voices and hone their craft. This initiative goes beyond creating opportunities; it’s about transforming the landscape of the music industry to reflect the richness of all of its creative contributors.

What is Black Lives in Music?
Black Lives in Music is an organisation working to help dismantle structural racism and level the playing field of opportunity for everyone in the UK music industry. We are supporting the industry by working with organisations to help provide more professional opportunities. We want to achieve equality for Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse professionals at all levels and in all areas of the UK music industry. Together, we know that representation matters. With our partners we are helping to create a level playing field for everyone to have an equal chance to succeed and without being the subject of discrimination.
Why is this initiative important?
The camp aims to provide women and gender-expansive people of color with hands-on training in sound engineering, increase job opportunities within the industry, and offer essential skills, support, confidence, and resources to help participants advance in their careers.
Who can apply for this program?
The “Turn It Up” program is open to women and gender-expansive people of colour who are emerging sound engineers, are 18 years of age or older, and reside in the UK.

For participants who may face financial barriers to attending, Black Lives in Music and We Are The Unheard may offer support or have resources available to assist with travel costs, please contact turnitup@blim.org.uk for more information.
