Executive Director

Salary: Circa £47,000 pro rata
Contract Type: Part-time, 3 days per week
Location: Forest Hill, London (with hybrid working options)
Reporting to: Co-Chief Executives

 

Role Overview
Jazz re:freshed is seeking a dynamic Executive Director to lead our small, passionate team into the next phase of our ambitious journey. This is a pivotal role in translating the creative visions of our co-Chief Executives into actionable business strategies, ensuring the smooth operation of the organisation while maintaining its artistic and cultural integrity.

As Executive Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the organisation’s business planning, day-to-day financial oversight, governance, and team management. You will ensure the sustainability and legal compliance of Jazz re:freshed while helping to push boundaries, attract new audiences, and support emerging talent in the ever-evolving jazz scene.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Business Planning
    Develop and implement long-term business strategies aligned with the co-Chief Executives’ vision. Lead the annual business planning process, setting strategic goals and ensuring financial sustainability.
  • Vision Translation & Funding Development
    Translate the creative vision of Jazz re:freshed into clear, actionable funding and business plans. Work closely with the Development Manager to create and implement an ambitious, yet realistic, funding strategy, ensuring that targets are consistently met.
  • Funder Relationship Management & Reporting
    Manage and develop relationships with key funders, ensuring clear communication and timely reporting. You’ll also oversee the Development Manager’s performance, supporting their professional growth. 
    The Development Manager role is new and yet to be recruited, therefore all fundraising responsibilities currently sit with the Executive Director – to be discussed at interview.
  • Governance & Legal Compliance
    Oversee all governance processes, including preparing board papers, managing Companies House statements, and ensuring the organisation’s legal and regulatory compliance. You’ll also oversee contract management with artists, employees, and other business stakeholders.
  • Risk Management
    Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate organisational risks, embedding strong risk management practices throughout the organisation.
  • Team & HR Management
    Lead recruitment, onboarding, and performance management across the team, fostering an inclusive, positive work environment where team members can thrive. You’ll also ensure clear communication of roles and responsibilities within the team.
  • Landlord & Facilities Liaison
    Act as the main contact with landlords, overseeing facility management to ensure the workspace meets the organisation’s operational needs.

About You: Key Skills & Experience
Essential

  • Strategic Leadership: Proven experience in strategic planning and business development, ideally in the arts, culture, or nonprofit sector.
  • Funding & Financial Management: Strong understanding of funding landscapes with a successful track record in securing and managing funding streams.
  • Governance & Compliance: Demonstrated knowledge of governance, legal, and regulatory requirements, especially in not-for-profit or arts organisations.
  • Risk Management: Ability to identify and mitigate risks within an organisation.
  • HR Management: Experienced in recruitment, team leadership, and employee relations.
  • Relationship Management: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with funders, board members, and partners.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex information.
  • Arts Sector Experience: Understanding of the music, arts, or cultural sectors, with a particular interest in jazz and contemporary music.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with legal processes and contract management within an organisational context.
