Here, we look back on our time at the English Folk Expo (EFEx), the annual music showcase event run by Sound Roots, a charity which supports the grassroots music sector, introducing the best folk, roots and acoustic music to new and existing audiences.

Held in Manchester, we had the pleasure of showcasing two folk talents – Germa Adan and Daudi Matsiko – both of whom flaunted their vocal prowess with rich performances for EFEx delegates in attendance. Delegates consisted of music industry representatives with an interest or active participation in the folk, roots and acoustic music sector in England.

The day’s events also included a panel discussion hosted by Roger Wilson (Co-Founder and Director of Operations at BLiM), accompanied by artists Angeline Morrison and Lady Nade (pictured). The panel provided space to address pertinent issues surrounding the lack of representation in folk music in the UK. Morrison and Nade shared their own experiences and challenges, prompting further discussion on the barriers to inclusion for folk artists of colour. EFEx delegates were also probed on what they are currently doing to support an inclusive sector, highlighting the necessary steps needed to spark change. Within this, a commitment was made to return to the expo to discuss progress.

Commenting on the showcase and panel, English Folk Expo Founder and Sales Director, Terry O’Brien, commended its success, adding that “feedback from the delegates has been universally positive and supportive on both the panel discussion and the artist showcases. I personally had delegates discussing in lifts about representation of artists of colour on arts centre programmes and overheard several delegates saying they would be booking one of your showcasing artists”.
